Central Government Employees Await DA Hike as October Announcement Faces Delay
Central government employees await the July 2026 DA hike after no announcement at the October 21 Cabinet meeting. Check the latest expectations, the current 60% DA rate, and the dates of July DA hike announcements in previous years.
Although the DA hike is generally announced following a Union Cabinet meeting, a Cabinet meeting is not mandatory for the government to declare an increase. The Finance Ministry can announce the revision without a Cabinet meeting. However, over the past few years, decisions on DA hikes have mostly been taken at Cabinet meetings, which is why central government employees are closely watching the next scheduled meeting.
Dearness Allowance is provided to central government employees to help offset the impact of inflation on their cost of living. Pensioners receive a similar benefit known as Dearness Relief. Both DA and DR are calculated as a fixed percentage of basic pay or pension.
The central government generally revises DA and DR twice a year, with the revised rates taking effect from January 1 and July 1. The announcement for the January revision is usually made in March or April, while the July revision is often announced in October.
The announcement for the January-June 2026 period was also delayed. On April 18, 2026, the Union Cabinet approved a 2 per cent increase in DA and DR, raising the rates from 58 per cent to 60 per cent of basic pay or pension. The revised rates were made effective from January 1, 2026. The increase was implemented under the approved formula linked to the recommendations of the 7th Central Pay Commission.
When Was the July DA Hike Announced in Previous Years?
Over the past five years, the central government has announced the July DA hike between late September and October. In 2025, the announcement was made on October 1; in 2024, on October 16; in 2023, on October 18; in 2022, on September 28; and in 2021, on October 21.
With the expected announcement missing from the October 21 Cabinet meeting, central government employees and pensioners are now looking towards next week's possible meeting for an update. The timing of the announcement remains uncertain, while the previous years' announcement dates indicate that the July DA and DR revisions have generally been declared during this period.
